The 5th Annual First Steps Spring Picnic

Again First Steps had a beautiful get together, and this time it was dedicated to honoring our veterans. We thank the Pypers, the volunteers, the honor Guard, and all the many people who helped to make this a fabulous fundraiser. Included in the fun organized by First Steps there was a best outfitted dog contest; a watermelon spitting contest and of course a hula-hoop, swing-a-thon, well worth hearing, especially the occasional moans. Everyone contributed, and the crowd was sizeable. So thanks again to the Pypers, veteran’s, the color Guard, volunteers and of course pooches in their finest garb. Thank you to everyone for a wonderful, memorable event!

Before the events of the picnic including the chowing down of the potluck buffet began, we sang the Star Spangled Banner and then recited the pledge of Allegiance. The veterans then introduced themselves by name rank and branch of Service. Next, we sang America the Beautiful. Our loving tribute was read to the veteran's, and we all stood in honor of the Color Guard coming through. It was then announced that it was Roger Hager's birthday. He had also served two tours of duty in Vietnam. In lieu of "Happy Birthday to You," we sang "God Bless America" in his honor.

In regard to the pooches, the first place winner was a small dog dressed as a ballerina and second Place went to the three pound puppy dressed as a cow girl. Everyone was a winner in this darling contest and Linda Hager provided loads of dog food and treats for the winner and runner up. We would like to offer our gratitude to all who were involved in the planning and assistance in making this 5th annual First Steps Spring Picnic a huge success. We would also like to thank the Veterans for their service to our country and for their presence at the picnic.
