The mission of First steps for the blind is to reach as many people as possible at the onset of their visual impairment. To offer comprehensive information and multiple resources they may draw on to help them during this trying time in their life. If they have already suffered either significant or total vision loss we will help them and their family members learn new skills. The families of individuals who live with or are close to someone with a vision loss have things to learn as well. We will encourage our clients to be as independent as they can be and that while their life has changed it is not over. They will have an opportunity to participate in a monthly support group meeting, as will their family and friends. They will make new friends and learn how those who have experienced this trauma have dealt with their loss and triumphed over it, just as they can. Life can and does go on, and we will do everything in our power to make sure they understand that and help them to achieve their goals and live a rich and rewarding life in spite of vision loss.
At the current time we are able to serve Jackson, clay, Platte and Cass counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas.
