For some tips, there just isn't any category that they really fit in. This short list will hopefully grow with input from our visitors. Please feel free to share your ideas with us.
Being famous as the worlds biggest klutzes isn't all it is cracked up to be. In an effort to keep me from falling up and down stairs my husband came up with a good idea and it really works. He placed throw rugs at the top of all the flights of stairs so I wouldn't walk off the top step when hurrying about my duties. He also placed one at the bottom so I do not fall up them either. It really does serve as a warning that there is DANGER AHEAD!!! (For me anyway)
Peter works on a lot of projects in our basement. At one place in the basement there are some pipes that hang very low. Peter is a tall guy and soon tired of bumping his head on them. He solved the problem by tying a narrow cord to something so that it hangs down just before he would walk into the pipes.
I carry with me a purse size bottle of disinfectant to cleanse my hands. I can always find the ladies room but I cannot always find the soap and towels to wash up with. A little squirt of this disinfectant and the hands are clean and germ free.
If your vision goes suddenly, there really is no time to map out specific routes in your home. You think that it is my house, I know where everything is. That's what I thought. Turns out it didn't look the same in the dark and I had some trouble getting to the back of the apartment without bumping into a wall. My mobility instructor suggested that I leave a radio on in the back of the apartment to give me sound clues to help find my way. It worked great and within a few weeks I didn't need the radio and passed it along to someone else who did.
Since I learned how to use the computer with its special adaptive software I am able to get out of one of the most hated of household chores. Grocery shopping. I didn't like doing it when I could see and I really didn't like it after my sight went. Some of the Hy-Vee grocery stores have an on-line ordering system and for a fee will deliver them right to your door. I love it and only order once a month to avoid paying the fee so many times. We run to the supermarket to pickup perishable items between orders. Call your local area Hy-Vee store and see if they have this service, if they don't contact the company and ask them why not. Be proactive to get the services that you want and need.
Eckerd Drug Stores seem to be on every street corner these days. They take many many different kinds of insurance, including Medicaid. My pharmacy delivers prescriptions at no extra charge. I would gladly pay for this service if necessary though. When you take as many medications as I do it is a real money saver as far as the cost of transportation goes, not to mention the convenience.
One other method of marking items was suggested to us by the daughter of one of our clients. It is such a good one and so obvious that I felt really silly for not thinking of it myself. Velcro can do so many things. You can mark kitchen appliances, washer and dryers, remote controls and many other items as well. You can purchase it in strips or in little round shapes.
