There are an estimated 11,000 visually impaired individuals in the greater Kansas City area. While medical science has come a long way in the prevention and treatment of eye diseases, vision loss is unfortunately a reality that cannot be escaped for some. As the baby boomers age the problem will only become worse. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of vision loss in the elderly and age related Macular Degeneration will claim the vision of many as they begin to reach their retirement years.
The loss of one's eye sight is one of the most devastating things a person will experience. It alters every phase of his or her life. All the things they once took for granted, now have to be relearned. A flight of stairs or crossing a street becomes a terrifying concept. It is an on going grieving process. Whenever there is a special event, such as the marriage of one's daughter or the birth of a new grandchild you feel that loss of vision each time.
If the visually impaired person is of working age, they may lose their job. At the very least, they will need to learn new skills so that they may return to work. Technology is helping to make vocational opportunities more open to the visually impaired. It is still difficult however.
There are all kinds of adaptive equipment available to assist the visually impaired person cope with what life has dealt them. The problem is, it is very expensive. Computer software can cost $1000.00 and even a simple double spatula for turning something in a skillet will cost $12.00.
